“First 1000 Days ni baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan”

Every year, in the month of July, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) leads the whole nation in the celebration of 2016 Nutrition Month, purposely to disseminate nutrition messages to all Filipinos through a focal theme. “First 1000 Days ni baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan” (Nurture your baby’s first 1000 days for a healthy future), the theme aims to highlight the significance of the first 1000 days of life, which roughly covers a child’s first three years. The main objectives of the theme is to:

1) To create awareness on the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices, particularly exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and giving appropriate complementary food after six months while continuing breastfeeding.

2) To promote collaboration among various stakeholders both at the national and local levels for programs serving families with pregnant mothers and children less than two years old.

In relation with this, the Local Government of Mina in cooperation with the Department of Education and other agencies organized a whole day program that includes a Cooking Contest and Bloodletting Activity on which the citizens of Mina participated.

Millions of young people around the world, the onset of adolescence bring not only changes to their bodies but also new vulnerabilities to sexuality, marriage and childbearing. An increasing number of girls are forced into unwanted sex, putting them at risk of unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, and dangerous childbirth. Adolescent boys are at risk, as well. Young people both boys and girls are disproportionately affected these.Yet too many young people face barriers to reproductive health information and care. Even those able to find accurate information about their health and rights may be unable to access the services needed to protect their health. For that reasons, Mina was chosen to be the pilot community health center with A.Y.(Adolescent-Youth) Friendly facility focuses to pregnant teenagers or we call Teen Moms. Last June 2016, the A.Y. technical working groups/AY Coordinators of different Provinces like Aklan, Antique, Guimaras and other LGUs in Iloilo visited A.Y.R.H.(Adolescent and Youth Reproductive Health) Clinic of Mina Health Center together with Elizabeth Bañez, R.N. from Provincial Health Office-Family Planning Coordinator and Joseph Carlo Carillo-Regional AY Coordinator-DOH Region VI. After the tour from Balay Paglaum, we had the open forum asking questions regarding how the facility works to address the AY concerns both for pregnant and non-pregnant, how we transact with referrals to other facilities, and others. But as of the moment we are still working to expand the scope of services that we will provide to teenagers as a one stop shop AY Clinic as the goal of our MHO, Dr. Janeatte Sobrevega.

Immunization for Senior Citizens

The Department of Health (DOH) launched the Expanded Pneumococcal Immunization Program for Senior Citizens. This year, all senior citizens aged 60 and 65 years old can avail of free pneumococcal vaccination in all health centers. The vaccine will comprise of two doses: senior citizens aged 60 years old will be given the first dose and will receive the second dose after a 5-year interval. On the other hand, senior citizens aged 65 years old will receive one dose of the pneumococcal vaccine. Pneumococcal disease is a leading cause of serious illness throughout the world. Age related-impairment of the immune system compounded with decrease of physical activity and poor nutrition increase the risk of severe pneumococcal infection. DOH wants to make sure that these are distributed not only to the people who have enough resources to access life saving-medicines and services, but also to our indigent citizens nationwide. Here in our municipality, last June 8, 2016 there were 165 Senior Citizens and 186 Indigent Senior Citizens that received the said vaccine (others have already received last 2014). This is our goal in attaining Universal Health Care of DOH.In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO statistics) estimated that more than 1.6 million people die from pneumococcal infections every year. It remains a major cause of death worldwide. Pneumonia along with acute lower respiratory tract infectionwas the second leading cause of morbidity among Filipinos (DOH Statistics). Immunization with pneumococcal vaccine protects people from pneumococcal infections. The WHO recommends the use of pneumococcal vaccine for the elderly. We can avoid complications, hospitalization, and even death if we choose to equip ourselves with our available vaccines today that we are lucky to have in health facility. But sad to say some senior citizens didn’t submit theirselves for vaccination due to misconception about pnuemo vaccine and its effect.
